Stop Talking About Yourself

Here’s the truth:
When someone signs up for your email list, they don’t care about you. Not yet.

They have a problem. They want help. And they think maybe you’re the person who can fix it. That’s it.

So if your welcome sequence is all about your journey, your story, your “look how awesome I am”, guess what? Your readers are tuning out. Fast.

Instead, flip the script. Focus on them. Solve their problems. Be helpful from the very first email.

Email #1: The “Connect” Email

Send this email 1–2 hours after someone joins your list. Not right away.

Why? Because if they signed up for your lead magnet, the first thing they should get is… the lead magnet! Not a welcome message. That comes next.

Once that’s done, your “Connect” email goes out. This one does a few super important things:

  • Shows you’re real: Invite them to connect with you on Instagram, Facebook, or wherever you show up.
  • Sets expectations: Tell them exactly how often you’ll email them (daily, weekly, etc.).
  • Mentions your main offer: Yup, right away. A quick mention of your core product, course, or coaching program. Keep it light and subtle, but let them know it exists.

Why does this work? Because some people are ready to buy now. They’re looking for the best fix to their problem. Don’t make them dig to find it.

This email is like a friendly handshake plus a menu of what’s to come. And yes, you’ll make sales from this one alone.

Email #2: Engage and Ascend

This email is short. Super short. All you’re doing here is asking them to reply.

Why? Two big reasons:

  1. Human connection: In a world of bots and AI, you show that you’re real and that you care.
  2. Better deliverability: When someone replies to your email (and you reply back), inbox providers like Gmail think, “Ah, this isn’t spam!” It boosts your sender reputation.

Bonus: People who reply are usually your hottest leads. Move them to DMs or invite them to a call, they’re ready to take action.

Email #3: The Contrarian Email

Now it’s time to stand out.

This is where you show how your approach is different. People have probably tried other solutions and failed. They’re skeptical. You need to show them that you are not like the rest.

Maybe you don’t just teach copywriting, you use real psychology. Maybe your system is built on proven results, not hype. Whatever it is, make that clear.

Show the contrast. Show the difference. That’s how they start to believe your way will finally work for them.

Email #4: Simplify and Amplify

Your reader is overwhelmed.

They’ve seen TikToks, reels, webinars, PDFs, freebies, and podcasts and they’re stuck. They don’t know what to do first, or what order to do it in.

This email tells them: “I’ve got the plan.”

Break down your system into one simple step. Make it feel easy. Then, crank up the urgency:

“Until you do this one thing, everything else stays hard. But once you do it, things start to click.”

That’s what gets attention. That’s what makes them take action. 

Email #5: The Credibility Lesson

This email gives value and shows your credibility, without bragging.

You don’t need to list your awards or earnings. Just drop your experience inside a lesson.

For example:

“When I taught this tip on stage to 1,000 entrepreneurs, there was an audible gasp…”

Or:

“After helping over 8,000 paying clients, here’s the pattern I’ve seen…”

You’re teaching, but you’re also showing that you’ve done the work.

And don’t forget this final step, open a loop. At the end of this email, tease the next one with a cliffhanger. Something like:

“Tomorrow, I’m going to show you the weird thing I do in my pants every morning that skyrockets my email open rate. Subject line: ‘The weird thing I do in my pants every morning.’ Don’t miss it.”

Now they’re waiting for your next email, and you just boosted your open rate for free.
